Dip, don’t dazzle
Night dives
Crystal clear night skies and falling temperatures are clearing the last of Stoney’s autumn algae away. At last, the winter diving season is here. Yippee! That means great viz and superb night dives. Night diving is awesome. It introduces new sensations and really sharpens your navigation skills. But then navigation between Stoney’s popular features is easy when you can see the Stanegarth lit up like a Christmas tree all the way from the bus. Some divers have torches that are so powerful that I no longer need to use my own. That’s just fine (dive technology is a marvellous thing – and available from the equally marvellous Underwaterworld), but please don’t shine your torch directly into my face as I swim by. It’s like being blinded by pesky drivers who forget to switch off their full beam. Dip, don’t dazzle and we’ll all be able to see where we’re going. Stoney Cove is open for night diving on the first and second Wednesdays of each month, between 6pm and 9pm.

Black Friday
Christmas gift bargains
We’ve got a lot to thank the Americans for … Coca Cola, traffic lights, dental floss, Trump and, of course, the greatest of new shopping traditions – Black Friday. This year, the peeps at Underwaterworld have pulled together a cracking Christmas collection of bargains for you in celebration of Black Friday. We decided to have a bit of fun so we’ve created our own style of advent calendar to reveal the deals as we approach the last shopping days. Even better, because we are always competitive at Underwaterworld (and carry huge stocks of all the best dive gear from all your favourite brands) if what you want is not included in the deal, just give us a call on 01455 273089 for our very best price.

Au revoir
Jenni goes skiing
Many of you will have become friends with our lovely Underwaterworld colleague – Jenni. Sadly her short time at Stoney Cove has come to an end as she prepares to head off for the snow to take charge of a chalet in La Plagne. I can assure any of her guests that they will be in for a treat. We’ll miss Jenni’s lively personality, but wish her the very best and look forward to her returning to Stoney Cove in the future. In the meantime, this opens a vacancy for an equally enthusiastic young person to take up the position of store assistant at Underwaterworld. For further details please take a look here...

Christmas at Stoney Cove
It’s almost time to taste Nemo’s Christmas Menu! Available from Friday 1 December to Friday 22 December, the menu includes FOUR delicious courses for just £16.95. It’s perfect for a Christmas get together or just because you fancy a slap-up meal accompanied by a blazing log fire and cosy atmosphere. Book ahead for lunchtimes and evenings to avoid disappointment – especially for larger groups – by calling Nemo’s on (01455) 274198. And don’t forget to check out the Christmas music night on 15 December, when our old favourites “The Cheese” will be bashing out classic rock tunes to create a riot of fun, dancing and merriment. Here are our opening times for diving over the Christmas and New Year holidays:

Stoney Cove's photo competition
At Stoney Cove, we love a good underwater photo and judging by the response we get from our facebook page when we post a fabulous shot, so do you. This month’s winner is Jonathan Fox with Casual Encounter, holding off Andy Kent in second place with Crab Fiddling with his Balls, while the runner-up is Chris Ryan with A night dive at Stoney Cove, it’s a whole different world. As camera technology develops in leaps and bounds, it’s never been easier to take superb underwater pictures, so why not have a go too? Don’t forget that we award a £50 voucher for the first prize and £25 for second and third places in our bi-monthly competition. The theme of the competition is DIVING.

The autumn algal bloom seems to have taken ages to pass this year. Thankfully it’s almost gone now, while the water is still unbelievably warm as a result of the ridiculously mild weather. We’re ready for a brilliant winter season. In other news, this month we placed the Shiers’ diving bell into the warm, clear waters of the Cove. It’ll be beside the bus stop for a few months until we finalise preparations for its move to a permanent location. Pop and see it! Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to a great December, packed with diving fun, nearly as much as the Nemo’s Christmas Mmmmenu…
