Practical ROV Experience for Archaeology

To provide theoretical understanding and hands-on experience of the use of ROVs in archaeology for underwater sites.

Participants will gain an understanding of the legislation behind ROV use in the UK and a theoretical understanding of operating ROVs. Participants will then spend several hours by the waters' edge getting hands-on experience handling a variety of different ROVs including: home-made ROVs, entry-level consumer ROV Gladius Mini and Enterprise ROV.

Underwater Archaeological Skills Days

Learn the essential practical skills that will allow you to develop your interest in underwater archaeology.

These two days of practical training are held in the controlled freshwater environment at Stoney Cove Dive Centre. You'll be doing all your practical training on a real Elizabethan wreck that was placed in 6-7m of water to allow you to experience a real wreck!

Underwater Skills Days

What’s it about?
Gain experience and discover more with the NAS Skills days. 
NAS Recorder and Surveyor Days introduce maritime archaeology fieldwork basics such as: site sketching, photography and video, 2D survey,  what to do with small finds and how to report your exciting discoveries. Complete the essential training you began with your eLearning courses at these practical Skills Days.

Who’s it for?

The course is aimed at divers who want to ‘dive with a purpose’ and learn how to develop their practical skills in recording and surveying archaeological sites.
This is a two-day, underwater diving course and participants are required to have a minimum BSAC Sports Diver, PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent diving qualification. You should have completed at least five dives in UK waters in the last year.

 

Underwater Photogrammetry

Course Aims
Learn the practical skills required to create 3D photogrammetry models of maritime artefacts and sites underwater. This course aims to introduce participants to the photogrammetry techniques involved in recording maritime archaeology artefacts and sites and give them hands-on experience of this process.

Who’s The Tutor?
Martin Davies has been an underwater photographer for almost forty years. He is a commercial diver and professional photographer who has considerable experience in underwater photogrammetry, particularly of archaeological sites.

Who’s It For?
This course is for anyone involved in the NAS Education Programme and particularly for professional or avocational archaeologists who want to learn how to make 3D digital models of their artefacts or sites.

Introduction to Dendrochronology

Course Aims
This course will provide an introduction to dendrochronology in maritime archaeology. Through a balance of short lectures, demonstrations, practical hands-on sessions and underwater practicals, participants will gain an understanding of the role of dendrochronology within the discipline. Participants will learn the skills required to take effective samples that will be suitable for scientific testing.

The course is aimed at individuals undertaking the NAS Education Programme, as well as professional archaeologists wanting to increase their knowledge of the role of dendrochronology and dendroprovenancing in archaeology with a particular emphasis on maritime and nautical archaeology.

Who’s The Tutor
Nigel Nayling has worked as an archaeologist and dendrochronologist for thirty years and is the foremost expert in tree-ring dating. He is a Professor at Lampeter University and widely sought-after consultant in dendrochronology.

Who’s It For?
This course is for anyone involved in the NAS Education Programme and particularly for professional or avocational archaeologists who want to learn how to take effective dendrochronology samples on their sites.
