Important Information, Rules & Conduct
Hazards You May Encounter
Scuba diving, Open-Water swimming and general presence around open bodies of water carry real risks and incidents can occur with potentially fatal consequences. While we work to maintain a safe and suitable site, risks can still be present. Before diving or swimming, please familiarise yourself with the following hazards and take appropriate precautions.
Hazard | What to know |
Slips and trips | Walking in cumbersome SCUBA equipment can compromise your mobility. Entry-point approaches are slopes or steps that become slippery when wet, use the handrails when possible. Elements in contact with the water may be extremely slippery due to algal growth. Ensure contact is kept with a secure object when possible. The slipway should be avoided, it is not an entry or exit point and is extremely slippery. Keep all quayside areas clear of loose items such as fins, shoes, towels, hoses etc. |
Water | Our water is deep and cold. Sudden immersion can trigger cold water shock. Undesired submersion may result in drowning. |
Falling rocks | Rocks may fall from the cliffs surrounding Stoney Cove, both above and below water. Keep away from the base of any cliff. |
Entanglement | A number of underwater features present entanglement hazards. Keep a safe distance from features and the lake bed. |
Entrapment | Some underwater features have accessible interiors. If you choose to venture within the item, you may become trapped. Only suitably trained or divers undergoing related training should enter. |
Silt | Some areas of the lake bed hold heavy silt deposits. Disturbing the silt reduces visibility and increases the risk of becoming lost or disorientated. Stay at least one metre above the silted lake bed. |
Diving Rules & Conduct
Scuba Diving can be dangerous. Incidents can occur with potentially fatal consequences. All divers have a responsibility for their own safety. Instructors, dive guides and diving buddies have a duty of care for those who are diving with them. Divers are reminded that they have the responsibility for the first actions to effect a successful rescue.
Before You Dive
- All visiting divers must have a valid booking in their name and the QR code on their ticket scanned on arrival.
- You must meet the minimum age requirement of your training association, and must not be younger than 12.
- Solo diving is not permitted at any time. Always dive with a buddy. If separated, ascend and rejoin at the surface.
- Junior participants (under 18) must be closely supervised by an adult at all times.
- Follow the safe diving practices of your training association (BSAC, PADI, SAA, SSI, etc.).
- Wear a buoyancy aid at all times.
- Plan your dive with reference to our regulations, recommendations and site information.
- Read all posted notices and assess site-specific risks before diving. Temperatures and daily specific risks will be outlined on the site notice board.
During Your Dive
- Do not use diver propulsion vehicles (DPVs) in poor visibility.
- If using a rebreather, deploy either a surface marker buoy (SMB) for the whole dive, or a delayed SMB on ascent.
- Dispose of used sodalime from rebreathers off-site.
- In an emergency situation for either yourself or another, follow the emergency guidance outlined in the relevant section of this page.
Diving Projects & Commercial Use
- Diving schools, instructors, and anyone diving in a commercial capacity (for payment or reward) must operate within the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. Stoney Cove staff will not operate as a ‘person on the side’ for any other school, instructor or company.
- Using still or moving images of any part of Stoney Cove for commercial purposes requires our specific written permission.
Swimming Rules & Conduct
Open-Water swimming can be dangerous. Incidents can occur with potentially fatal consequences. All swimmers have a responsibility for their own safety. Instructors, guides and swim partners have a duty of care for those who are diving with them. Swimmers are reminded that they have the responsibility for the first actions to effect a successful rescue.
Before You Swim
- All visiting swimmers must have a valid booking in their name and the QR code on their ticket scanned on arrival.
- Swimmers must be competent to swim unaided. There is nowhere to place your feet down or rest.
- Solo swimming is not permitted at any time — swim in groups of two or more, or have a spotter watching from the side.
- Swimmers must not be younger than 12.
- Junior participants (under 18) must be closely supervised by an adult at all times.
- Carry a brightly coloured, towable buoy for visibility and emergency buoyancy.
- We advise wearing a wetsuit for warmth and buoyancy, a brightly coloured swim hat for visibility and an emergency whistle to aid in emergency alert.
- Plan your swim based upon your ability, current climate and site-specific risks before entering the water.
- Read all posted notices and assess risks before swimming. Temperatures and daily specific risks will be outlined on the site notice board.
- If you’re unsure about anything, ask a member of staff — or don’t swim.

What To Do in an Emergency
Situation | Action |
Your buddy is underwater and in difficulty | Help them to the surface if you can safely do so. |
You lose sight of your buddy | Look around in a 360 degree motion, looking above and below. Make a safe ascent to the surface. Look around the waterline and below you before immediately raising the alarm. |
Your buddy is on the surface and in difficulty | Raise the alarm immediately — blow your whistle, shout, and wave. |
You see someone in trouble at the water’s edge | Raise the alarm immediately. Alert staff in the shop while keeping the person in the water in sight. |
Stoney Cove volunteer staff will respond immediately to any emergency. Alert staff at once if an accident occurs.
